Roofs in New Castle

A lot of New Castle was built between 1900 and the 1950s, when the Maxwell plant and then Chrysler were hiring. Many of those houses have steep roofs, two or three layers of old shingles, and plank decking under them instead of plywood.

Planks leave gaps, and new shingles need a solid deck. So a tear-off on an older house here often means laying new sheathing before the shingles go on. Where we can see that from the attic, it is on your estimate from the start.

The ranch houses on the edges of town have lower pitches and wide eaves. That is where ice builds up in January and where wind lifts the first rows. Summer storms come in from the west over open farmland, so after one we mostly find damage on west and south slopes, and hail dents in gutters and roof vents.

Jobs we have done in New Castle

  • White brick house with a new gray shingle roof and a Tabor yard sign in the lawn
Roof replacement, New Castle, May 2025

Roof replacement on a painted brick house

Old shingles off down to the decking, ice and water membrane at the eaves and in the valleys, and charcoal architectural shingles. Two days, with the yard sign left for a week at the owner’s say-so.

  • Brick house with two dormers and a brown shingle roof on an overcast day
Roof replacement, New Castle, June 2024

    New roof and reflashed dormers

Brown architectural shingles on a brick house with two dormers. The old step flashing at the dormer walls had been tarred over, so we replaced it with new metal.

Permits in New Castle

Replacing shingles like for like on a house in New Castle does not normally need a building permit. Structural work does: new rafters, new sheathing over a large area, a changed roofline. Where a job needs a permit, we pull it and its cost is a line on your estimate.

Questions from New Castle

Do you have an office in New Castle I can visit?

No. Tabor has no walk-in office. Shawn runs the business from New Castle and comes to your house to look at the job.

My house has two layers of shingles. Can you go over them?

No. Indiana’s residential code allows two layers at most, and a third would be too heavy for most older framing anyway.

We take the roof down to the deck so we can see and fix what is under it.
