White aluminum fascia and soffit under the eaves of a brick house

Soffit and fascia in New Castle, Indiana

The fascia is the board your gutters hang on. The soffit is the underside of the overhang, where the attic takes in its air. We cut out the rot, replace the wood, wrap the fascia in aluminum and fit vented soffit panels.

Question 1 of 3

Which side of the house, what you can see from the ground, and whether the gutters are staying up.

Signs the soffit or fascia needs work

Look up at the overhang from the yard, then take a look in the attic on a cold morning.

  • Paint peeling on the board behind the gutter

Paint lets go when the wood under it is wet. On a fascia board that almost always means water is getting behind the gutter, not just onto the paint.

  • A gutter that will not stay up

Screws and spikes do not hold in rotted wood. If a run keeps pulling loose at the same spot, the board is the problem and a new hanger will not fix it.

  • A soffit panel sagging or lying on the ground

Wind gets into an open overhang and pops the panels out of their channel. Squirrels and raccoons do it on purpose.

  • Birds, wasps or squirrels going in at the eaves

Starlings and sparrows nest in any gap at the corner where two roof edges meet. A squirrel will chew a soft fascia board until it has a doorway.

  • Frost on the nails in the attic

That is house moisture with no way out. Older soffits are solid plywood with a few small grilles, often painted shut or buried in insulation.

  • Brown streaks on the soffit below the roof edge

Water is running back under the shingles at the eave and through the overhang. A missing drip edge or an ice dam is the usual cause.

How the job goes

Four steps. The second one is where most of the surprises are found.

  1. You call, text or send the form.

Tell us what you can see from the ground. You get a reply within 5 minutes.

  2. Shawn looks behind the gutter.

Usually within two days. He lifts the gutter or a soffit panel at the worst spot, checks the rafter ends with an awl and takes photos.

  3. You get the photos and a written price.

The price says how many feet of board we expect to replace and what each extra foot costs if we find more once it is open. No guessing after the fact.

  4. We replace, wrap and vent.

Gutters down, rotted wood out, new boards primed and nailed up, aluminum bent to fit over them, vented soffit panels in, gutters back on.

What the day is like

All the way around a house is two or three days. Ladders stand along the eaves and a metal brake, a long folding bench for bending the aluminum, is set up in the yard or the driveway.

The gutters come down in the morning and lie on the lawn until the boards behind them are done. If rain is coming we do not open more eave than we can close that day.

You will hear a saw and a nail gun at the roof edge. Keep cars away from the wall we are on, because old boards come down with nails in them. We run a magnet over the ground before we leave.

The warranty

All work is backed up by our workmanship warranty.

Who does the work

Shawn Tabor looks at every job and writes the price. The carpentry and the metal work are done by Tabor’s own crew, the people who fit our roofs and gutters. That matters here, because the roof edge, the fascia and the gutter all have to shed water in the same direction.

Questions about soffit and fascia

What is the difference between soffit and fascia?

The fascia is the upright board along the edge of the roof. The gutter is screwed to it.

The soffit is the flat underside of the overhang between that board and the wall of the house. Its vents are where the attic draws in air.

Can you just wrap aluminum over the old boards?

Only if the boards are dry and solid. Aluminum over rotted wood hides the rot and keeps it wet. We replace anything soft first and photograph the new wood before it is covered.

Does the soffit really need vents?

Yes. Air has to come in low at the eaves and leave high at the ridge. Without it the attic holds moisture all winter and bakes the shingles from below in summer.

We also check that the insulation is not packed against the vents from inside. If it is, we fit baffles to hold it back.

Why did my fascia rot in the first place?

Nearly always water getting behind the gutter. The fix is a drip edge that laps into the gutter and a gutter hung tight under it. We check both, or the new board will go the same way.

Can this be done at the same time as a new roof or new gutters?

That is the right time. The gutters are already off and the roof edge is open, so there is no labor spent twice. Most of our soffit and fascia work is done alongside one or the other.
