Storm and hail damage repair in New Castle, Indiana
After hail or high wind, Shawn Tabor checks your roof, gutters and siding and sends you the photos. The roof inspection is free.
What hail and wind damage looks like from the ground
Stay off the roof. Hail shows on thin metal before it shows on shingles, so walk around the house and start with the gutters.
Dents in gutters, downspouts and roof vents
Aluminum gutters and vent caps dent where a shingle only bruises. The size of the dents and the side of the house they are on tell us how big the hail was and where it came from.
A pile of black grit under the downspouts
Hail knocks the granules off a shingle. A fresh handful at the splash block the morning after a storm means the surface took hits, even if the roof looks the same from the yard.
Shingles or pieces of shingle on the lawn
Straight-line wind gets under a shingle at the edge of the roof and along the ridge. Around here the west and south slopes lose them first.
A dark line across a shingle that still looks in place
A shingle that lifted in the wind and dropped back is creased about an inch below the row above. Its seal is broken, and the next storm takes it off.
Dents and tears lower down
Look at the mailbox, the fins on the air conditioner, the window screens and the siding on the side the storm came from. Hail that cracked vinyl siding also hit the roof above it.
A new stain on a ceiling
It can show up days after the storm, and often a few feet from where the water got in. Take a photo of it with the date.
What we do after a storm
Four steps, and you decide after the third.
You call, text or send the form.
Tell us what you have seen, or that you have seen nothing and want the roof checked. You get a reply within 5 minutes.
Shawn inspects and takes photos.
Every slope, the ridge, the flashing, the vents, the gutters and the siding. About 30 to 45 minutes.
You get the photos and a written estimate.
It lists what was damaged and what the repair costs. If the roof is fine, he tells you so. What you do with the estimate, including whether to make an insurance claim, is your decision. If you do, Shawn talks to your insurer about the roof and tries to be there when the adjuster comes.
We repair it.
When you say go, we set the date.

What the roof inspection is like
Shawn sets a time with you and texts when he is on his way. You do not need to be home, as long as he can get a ladder to the roof.
He walks the house first and looks at the gutters, the downspouts, the siding and the window screens. Then he goes up. On the roof he checks each slope for bruised and creased shingles, the ridge cap, the metal around the chimney and the vent caps, and photographs what he finds with the slope it is on.
You get the photos the same day, with a plain answer: no storm damage, a repair, or a roof that is past repairing. The written estimate follows.
The warranty
All work is backed up by our workmanship warranty.
Who does the work
Shawn Tabor does the inspection or sends one of Tabor’s own crew, and he prices every job himself. The repair is done by the same crew that works here the rest of the year. If something is wrong with the repair next spring, we are still in New Castle.

How to check any roofer, including us
- Is the company local, with a name you can look up?
- Will they give you proof of insurance?
- Do they put the price and the work in writing?
- Do they pressure you to sign today? A good roofer does not.
If you make an insurance claim
This is the short version. The page linked under these two lists has the rest.
What we do
- Inspect the roof, gutters and siding, free.
- Photograph the damage we find and write it down.
- Give you a written estimate of the repair.
- Talk to your insurer about the roof, and be there when the adjuster comes if we can.
- Do the repair once you have decided.
What you do
- Decide whether to make a claim. Shawn will tell you what he recommends.
- File the claim with your insurer.
- Choose your roofer.
Your insurer decides what is covered.
Questions about storm and hail damage repair
How do I tell storm damage from an old roof?
From the ground you mostly cannot, which is why the inspection is free. Hail leaves round bruises where the granules are knocked into the mat, scattered across a slope. Age leaves even wear, curled edges and bare patches below the valleys.
Shawn photographs both and tells you which is which. If what he sees is wear and not storm damage, that is what he says.
Is the roof inspection really free?
Yes. There is no charge, whether we find damage or not, and whether or not you ever hire us.
A roofer knocked on my door after the storm. What should I do?
Do not sign anything at the door. The Indiana Attorney General’s checklist gives you questions to ask any roofer. Is the company local and established? Will it put the price and the work in writing? How much does it want paid before work begins? Is the warranty in writing?
Ask us the same questions. There is a list further down this page.
How soon after a storm should I have the roof looked at?
For the roof’s sake, within a week or two. A creased shingle or a dented vent cap lets a little water in with every rain, and the decking under it stays wet.
Whether your policy sets a time limit for a claim is a question for your insurer or your agent, not for a roofer.
Do you fix the gutters and siding from the same storm?
Yes. Gutters, downspouts, soffit, fascia and siding are our work too, so the whole outside of the house is on one estimate.
